—The Gospel—

The “Sinner’s Prayer” or “Salvation Prayer” is a common way for individuals to express repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ. It’s important to understand that it is not a magical formula; the words themselves don’t save. Salvation comes from a genuine, heartfelt repentance and faith in Jesus.

The prayer is simply a way to verbalize that decision. There is no single, official version in the Bible, but most include the following key elements:

· Confession of being a sinner.

· Repentance (a turning away from sin).

· Belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who died for our sins and rose from the dead.

· Invitation for Jesus to come into your life as Lord and Savior.

Here is a common and well-known version of the prayer:

The Sinner’s Prayer (A Common Example)

“Dear God in heaven,

I come to you in the name of Jesus. I admit that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins and the life I have lived; I need your forgiveness.

I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, and is alive.

I invite Jesus to come into my heart and life right now. I confess Him as my Lord and Savior. I want to trust and follow Jesus for the rest of my life.

Thank you, Lord, for saving me and forgiving me of my sins! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Important Things to Understand

1. It’s About the Heart, Not the Words: The specific words are less important than the sincere belief and surrender behind them. It is the faith in your heart that saves you, not the recitation of a prayer (Romans 10:9-10).

2. Not a Biblical Command: You won’t find a verse that says, “Pray this prayer to be saved.” In the Bible, people were saved by repenting and believing, often expressed through baptism and a public confession. The Sinner’s Prayer is a modern tool that helps people articulate that biblical faith.

3. The Beginning of a Journey: This prayer is a decision that marks the start of a new life as a Christian. It should be followed by baptism, growing in faith through reading the Bible, prayer, and fellowship with other believers in a church.

If you have prayed this prayer and meant it from your heart, Christians believe you have begun a new relationship with God. The next step is to tell someone about your decision and find a Bible-believing church to help you grow.
